Be Inspired – A True Success Story Within the Hoop

Posted March 31st, 2014 by Michelle

Hooping is an activity that can change lives.  Here is a story from one of our students and friends of the STL Hoop Club.  We asked her to share her journey so far… This is such a compelling example of overcoming one of the hardest things to deal with for the body, being overweight—

My name is Chelsie Ashley (pictured left) and I have struggled with weight issues my entire life.  It started as a child, in fact I remember in third grade getting on the scale and it reading 100lbs.  I battled with self esteem issues just like everyone did in pre-teen years and leading in to teenage years.   I could not understand what was wrong with me and why I was not “skinny” like my peers.  I was teased and picked on for my size and not very athletic to say the least.

The weight struggle continued into high school and in to my early twentys.  After high school I went to college for my license in Massage Therapy, in the program I was educated on proper nutrition and exercise and how it is important for the Therapists as well as the clients.

Needless to say I did not apply that to my own life just yet.

My journey began with a hula hoop, it was something that intrigued me.  I had a few friends that practiced hoop dance and hoop fitness and I thought it was absolutely beautiful.  I was determined to learn even though as a child I couldn’t even keep it going on my waist, but I did not let that stop me.  I did a little bit of research and found that St. Louis had a hoop club and offered beginners hula hoop classes! I was thrilled.  I attended classes weekly and practiced at home every chance I got, even took it to work with me and practiced on my breaks.

After a year of hula hooping, I decided to take a step further.  One of my co-workers had been using a program on her phone called My Fitness Pal (calorie counter)  I observed her as she lost weight and started to feel better physically and mentally.  Her success inspired me and I started using the program, making smarter choices with food, hula hooping more, and exercising with work out dvds.  I do not count calories anymore. It was a good tool in the beginning and opened my eyes to eating as healthy and raw as possible. After that it was like a snowball effect, I began practicing yoga, joined a gym. Now I am doing things physically that I never dreamed of, been training for a triathlon and will be starting a yoga teacher training program this June. Through out my journey I have lost 100lbs and I will never look back and will contiue this lifestyle change for the rest of my life.  All things are possible and it all started with a hula hoop.
